Expectations Of My Family And My Life - 949 Words

Expectations in Life Introduction paragraph Have you ever had expectations that people expect you to follow? I do. My family has several expectations of me. Such as school, my career, following rules for relationships, and how I should act. Body paragraph 1 The first expectation my family expect from me was in school and my career. For instance, my dad’s expectation of school was that he had high hopes for me to go to a university, and I would become a successful person in life. In other words, my mom’s expectation was to graduate from high school because she didn’t want to end up like her and didn’t finish school. My parents pushed their expectation of a proper education because they never got the chance for a proper education growing up. They believed that we could do well in school. Meanwhile, my grandma’s expect of me in school and career. Her expectation is for me to go to a university or a college just like my other cousins. Since, she compares my education to my cousins, she tells me to be a successful student in school and have a great career. She always told me as a child until now that I had to become a doctor because doctors make a lot of money. However, I did not want to copy my cousins, so I decided I would make my own choices in my career. Therefore, one day I will become a teacher. General Karenzi Karake Is Part Of The International Community

The recent arrest of General Karenzi Karake is part of the international community trying to grasp its understandings of Rwanda’s bloody history. On the night of April 6, 1994, Rwandan President Juvenal Habyarimana assassination while flying back to Rwanda by unknown fighters triggered the last genocide of the twentieth century. The Rwandan Genocide or also named the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsis, ravaged the entire country as neighbours killed neighbours. Genocide perpetrators claimed that the massacres were required in order to protect the nation from the invading Tutsi-dominated Rwanda Patriotic Front (RPF), which Rwanda had been fighting since 1990. It was the belief that the RPF wished to reestablish dominance over the majority Hutu population such as during the Belgium colonial period (1922-1962). The international community decided within the first few days to remove its presence with the removal of its citizens and the downgrading of the United Nations Assistance Mi ssion for Rwanda (UNAMIR). The world looked away as in around one hundred days; over one million Tutsis and moderate Hutus were butchered by the genocide forces. The massacres only ceased when the RPF’s military wing, the Rwanda Patriotic Army (RPA) fully invaded the country and expelled the genocide forces into eastern Zaire or know named the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). As expected, the genocide cannot be as easily defined as it composes various elements that all play a role in the history of

Financial Analysis of Yum Brands Free Essays

A Financial Analysis of Yum! Brands, Inc Restaurants are, and will continue to be, an extremely profitable business. As a result, shareholders who have interest in brands such as McDonalds and Starbucks need not to worry about negative implications for the food giants compared to more risky industries. One company in particular, Yum! Brands (YUM), is another brand investors should become familiar with. We will write a custom essay sample on Financial Analysis of Yum Brands or any similar topic only for you Order Now Consumers may recognize the more specific stores the company owns such as Taco Bell and Pizza Hut, but investors should realize the sales and earnings growth associated with this organization. In addition, while there are many companies in the restaurant industry, Yum not only rings familiar with consumers like Starbucks, but Yum engenders excellent financial news at a level above its competitors. However, before trying to access these financial statements, it is important to understand more specifics about Yum’s business model. According to Reuters, Yum â€Å"is a quick service restaurant (QSR) with over 34,000 units in more than 100 countries and territories. † These quick service restaurants include consumer favorites such as Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, Long John Silver’s, and KFC. Whether the operating segment sells pizza or chicken, â€Å"Yum develops, operates, franchises and licenses a worldwide system of restaurants, which prepare, package and sell a menu of food items. † As each of these fast-food places is obvious to most readers in America, it is also quite interesting that over 100 countries are familiar with these names as well. In fact, segments like KFC were actually introduced in many markets like China before more obvious competitors like McDonalds. Since fast food is generally considered an inelastic, or non-cyclical, good, even during times of economic uncertainty, Yum will prosper. While most of its food is relatively cheap compared to rivals such as Brinker and Darden, consumers will still flock to Yum restaurants in similar volume during any stage of the economic cycle. Therefore, revenue growth should continue to remain steady, but positive, year after year making Yum a great portfolio choice at any time. To justify this claim, during the past twelve months, Yum received a revenue figure, according to Reuters, of $9. 56 billion. This number was a 5. 05% increase compared to the previous year number. While this increase in margin was a bit below the average year-to-year increase of 6. 58%, the difference in growth decline was only a 23% difference. Other companies like Brinker saw a 43% deceleration during this same time period. In addition, while some investors may critique the industry 11. 31% growth in sales during the past to Yum’s lower numbers, it is also important to realize that Yum supports the seconds highest sales figure in its industry, and appreciation of revenue growth will be much difficult than smaller-capitalization companies to come-by. This is in addition to the fact that many lower-revenue companies in this industry are actually seeing negative sales growth (not deceleration) during the same time frame as the aforementioned analysis. With these thoughts on sales at hand, these numbers can be used at the broadest of levels to illustrate that the steady increase and influx of money into Yum over its career has aided in the appreciation of its share price. Since 2003, not once has Yum seen a calendar year decrease in price. This comes with a 25% appreciation in 2006 and a 12% escalation so far in 2007–despite the recent economic turmoil. These sales and share price indications illustrate that Yum will fair very well during all types of economic activity. Nevertheless, revenue cannot be the only financial analysis required to find superior companies. It is vital to understand how efficient a company is in reducing costs and using capital and labor to actually produce the final good. These intangible-sounding comparisons can actually become tangible given the use of margins. Starting from gross margins, investors should be happy to find out that over the past twelve months, growth at 25. 9% has been higher than the pervious five year average of 24. 82%. While the former is a bit below the industry’s average of 29. 04%, it is important to stress that Yum’s revenue is the second highest in a fairly large industry, making outstanding margins difficult to come by. Nevertheless, compared to close revenue competitors, Yum’s gross margins are better than Starbucks’s (23. 62%), Darden’s (23. 50%), and Brinker’s (16. 42%). In addition, Yum’s operating margins of 13. 14% are not only higher than its five year average of 12. 84%, but is doing better than the industry’s twelve month margin of only 11. 76%. Moreover, these operating figures for Yum are also better than the same-time period numbers of Starbucks (11. 18%), Darden (9. 53%), and Brinker (7. 87%). While these numbers all indicate growth for Yum, the biggest instrument (that will be justified later with valuation tactics) is earnings differences. Fortunately for Yum, a 16. 27% increase in earnings per share over the past year is 29. 74% higher that the company’s five year average increase. Compared to competitors, all three of Brinker, Darden, and Starbucks saw a deceleration of earnings growth last year, and none of these yearly increases matched the top-revenue producer, Yum. While there is clear evidence that Yum is great growth story, some investors may wonder whether Yum is overvalued given its success. Fortunately for these investors, this is not the case. In fact, some potential shareholders may make the claim that Yum is undervalued. Currently the industry has a P/E multiple of 31. 88 and a price to sales ratio of 2. 10. However, if analyst expectations are correct or and underestimate actual results (5/5 and 4/5 correct or below last five quarters for EPS and sales respectively), Yum sees a forward price to sales ratio 1. 9 and price to earnings ratio of 20. 18. Now while these numbers are not extraordinarily undervalued, as companies like Darden have slightly lower figures, compared to the industry as a whole and competitors like Starbucks (2. 25 price to sales and 31. 48 price to earnings), Yum’s valuation is far from being labeled as a negative characteristic. Therefore, given good growth reports and not too much speculation relative to s hare price, there is strong news from both further financial achievement and valuation. However, before reaching a final conclusion, there are some other indicators to look at. One of these criteria is management efficiency. According to Reuters, Yum had seen a 60. 80% ROE figure for the past twelve months. While a bit smaller than the five year average, the number easily obliterates the industrial average and all three aforementioned market-cap competitors. This figure illustrates that Yum is not only increasing its net profit year after year, but helping investors by purchasing back some of its stock. Although capital spending is a bit below industrial averages at -0. 0% over the past five years for Yum, the company still has a healthy balance sheet of cash, especially compared to its price (undervalued). In addition, efficiency also comes from the company’s turnover ratios. Receivable turnover at 41. 62%, inventory turnover at 80. 93%, and asset turnover at 1. 61% are all quite above the industrial averages and many competitor averages as well. Solvency with a current ratio of 0. 59 is quite low, but inline relative to the rest of the industry, but fast food restaurants need not to worry too much about liquidating assets. In addition, 83. 13% of equity for Yum is owned by institutional investors. This number is above the industrial figure at 74. 07% and also above Darden’s and Starbuck’s respective numbers. While there are many intelligent retail investors, having the real experts in institutional investors carry the bulk of the company shows optimism for future performance. And in additional to this control, another enticement in a 1. 81% dividend yield should also help investors relay this company into more hands at a higher share price. Looking at the business model and fundamental features, there is strong evidence to support that investing in this company will yield strong returns. Technically speaking, the share price of Yum just recently crossed both the 50 day SMA and EMA–a bullish signal, and while there is encouragement to invest any time to profit from this company, now would be an almost ideal situation. Therefore, with the above information provided to benefit long term investors, it is closely assured that investing in YUM! Brands will produce genteel capital gains for shareholders. The relationship between intel... free essay sample

The relationship between intelligence and crime is a topic that is still currently debated among many individuals. Despite the progress we have made in science, such as high-tech brain imaging and tests that target intelligence, there are many deficiencies that still exist regarding to the mechanisms that underlie the crime-intelligence relationship. When the short comings of these mechanisms are looked at more closely, scientist find that there are new hypothesis that have emerge in order to fully understand, and explain the intelligence factor within the criminal relationship. Intelligence itself is defined generally as cognitive abilities, brain-based abilities, and the general intelligence abilities of individuals. We first have to look at the basics of the human IQ differential among criminal offenders verses non-criminal offenders. It is believed that the IQ for offenders that are in the juvenile bracket is on average ninety-two percent overall while about twenty five percent of adult offenders in the prison system had a IQ below the eighty percent bracket (Ellis ;Walsh, 2003). We will write a custom essay sample on The relationship between intel or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page An average of only ten percent of non-criminal offenders in the general population score below the eighty mark, while sixty-three percent score an average of sixty-four IQ. If we look at the scores that are derived from inmates in prison, this in itself clearly shows a correlation between intelligence and criminal offense. Studies conducted have found that individuals with lower IQs are more likely to commit a criminal offense or be involved in some sort of criminal activity over the course of their lives (Ellis Walsh, 2003). These individuals are more likely to be involved in crimes involving acts of violence and have even been shown to participate in property crime. There are also genetic and environmental influences within IQ and intelligence factors that relate to the individuals that commit criminal offenses. Scientist believed prior to the nineteen sixties that the origin of IQ itself was genetically hereditary, but quickly fell out of favor and was classified as a politically incorrect research topic. Advances in the field of science quickly ushered in a new era of understanding for the origin of IQ as behavioral genetics. There were a variety of methods use by researchers to help them dissect the behavior of humans and classify them into components. These components consisted of the proporti on of variance in IQ that is attributable to environments that are similar within all the family members, environmental influences that are unique to specific or individual family members, and the variance within the IQ that is associated with genes. Studies conducted with twins were preferred in order to look at environmental vs genetic influences due to the fact that they share DNA and this allows researchers to estimate the degree of heritability in the complex traits of these individuals. It was hypothesized that if IQ is one hundred percent inheritable than the twins themselves would roughly score within the same range bracket. On the other hand if environmental factors and variable are responsible than the estimates within the heritability factor should be reduced by a substantial amount. There have been numerous behavioral studies that have shown that genetic influences of individuals are extensive across a wide range of human traits and behavioral patterns. It has also been shown that there are relative contributions of both environmental factors and genetic factors to intelligence itself. Environmental influences on an individuals IQ is extremely hard to detect due to the fact that the human genes that are associated w ith cognition are also related to that of social behaviors. One example we can look at is a family that has a live in grandmother that reads all the time and has a notorious number of books. This would mean that there would be more reading material available to the children. This would more than likely produce children with hire IQs than that of a household who has no books. This direct factor shows how influences in every day lives contribute to the development of intelligence. Indirect relationships are another factor that had criminologist sought to research and examine in regards to the intelligence-crime relationship. The main theory that was looked at is known as the social bond theory. Examining this theory more closely stated that humans are born with the natural sense to commit crime. If this is true then people would actually have to be stopped before they could carry out their desires. An individuals ability to restrain themselves from carrying out a crime is believed to be influenced greatly by the individuals bonds to society and their community. The bonds which theoretically tie humans together are known as attachment to society, personal commitment to society, involvement in society, and certain aspects of belief within that society. When these bonds were looked at closely it was discovered that a persons attachment to school is the most relevant in the explanation of indirect relationships. These are bonds that people make while attending school with other individuals or instructors. The theory is that individuals that build these strong relationships would rather avoid shaming or disappointing the people they have become close to. This would in turn deter the individual from committing the crime or prevent them from acting out in a delinquent manner. But a factor that tends to be overlooked is a persons ability on an intellectual level and how this can affec t them negatively. For example, failing classes or struggling to catch up on homework which in turn causing failing grades. This would potentially cause more stress and anxiety causing the individual to act out with violence. The attachments formed with instructors would begin to become severed and commitment would dissipate. Although focusing on cognitive factors that place people at a much higher rate of likelihood to commit crimes or to recommit crimes, we still need to focus on other characteristics such as responsivity factors. These factors need to be researched closely and both identified and evaluated because they can potentially interfere or interact with a persons ability to be able to respond properly to treatment or programs that have been put into place. Personality disorders for example such as Paranoid Personality Disorder, Schizotypal Personality Disorder, and Narcissistic Personality Disorder all have the potential to affect the intelligence-crime relationship. When placing people int o rehabilitation programs professionals need to evaluate a persons intelligence level to be able to determine possible struggles or the potential to commit crimes. This should be considered because people with these types of disorders along with their intelligence level would potentially cause different trains of thought and processing. This would also allow professionals to evaluate the potential of individuals to complete the rehabilitation programs and prevent them from returning to prison.

Producing aspirin by vacuum filtration Essay Example

Producing aspirin by vacuum filtration Paper Method: Collect all the equipment, using a measuring balance weigh out 5. 0g of 2-hydrobenzoic acid in a conical flask. Then add 7cm3 of ethanoic acid anhydride and also add three drops of concentrated sulphuric acid.   At the top of the conical flask fit the air condenser and mix together the reagents and then add to a water bath with a temperature between 50- 60  °C for 15 minutes.   After you have taken the conical flask out of the water bath then run it under cold water, remember not to remove the air condenser. Next add 75cm3 of distilled water, and then using a glass rod stir well. Then using a separating funnel adds filter paper to the top of the vacuum filter and then pours the solution into the Buchner funnel. Release the tap so water allows the filtration to process quickly. Then collect the solids which have been separated in the vacuum filtration Re-crystallise by transferring the crude product to 100cm3 flask and add in 15cm3 of ethanol, alongside 45cm3 of distilled water. Then fit the air condenser and place the conical flask into the water bath until the crude has dissolved   Allow the solution to cool and then collect the product by vacuum filtration. Finally dry the product at room temperature. Vacuum filtration: Vacuum filtration is a technique used for separating a solid product from a solvent, or liquid reaction mixture, the mixture of solid and solvent is poured through a filter paper in a Buchner funnel, the solid is trapped in the filter paper and the liquid is poured through into a flask below by a vacuum. A filter is used to separate the solid from liquid by a vacuum pump to force the liquid through the filter. This is why vacuum filtration is used to obtain recrystallized solids such as aspirin. We will write a custom essay sample on Producing aspirin by vacuum filtration specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now We will write a custom essay sample on Producing aspirin by vacuum filtration specifically for you FOR ONLY $16.38 $13.9/page Hire Writer We will write a custom essay sample on Producing aspirin by vacuum filtration specifically for you FOR ONLY $16.38 $13.9/page Hire Writer The liquid in the solution will pass through the filter paper quicker in order to achieve a dryer product in less time. When recrystallizing the aspirin the impurities were kept in the solution, I used the process of vacuum filtration, this process got most of the water out which took out the impurities too. This process was really good to use, once all the impurities were took out the aspirin was ready to use for the next process. Re-crystallisation: Re-crystallisation is technique to dispatch a soluble. This technique relies on gentle evaporation of the solution over heat. The slower the evaporation, the bigger the crystals. This procedure of crystal formation helps to clean the substance. This is because the structure of crystal is reliant on on the form of the lattice pattern. Re-crystallisation depends on on alteration in solubility of substances so the impurities substances crystal out first so the rest can re-crystallise. Aspirin is less soluble then the impurity, so when adding cold water to it the saturated point reduces. As this reduces this shows that no more is able to dissolve allowing white solids to form. These solids form they crystallise so more products comes out allowing more crystallisation to occur leaving behind the impurities. Melting point results table: Test tubes Temperature Ca ¦ 1st try 132 Ca ¦ 2nd try 128 Ca ¦ 3rd try 130 Ca ¦ Average of the temperature: 132 + 128 + 130 = 390 Ca ¦ 390Ca ¦ = 130Ca ¦ 3 AVERAGE = 130 Ca ¦ The melting point of pure aspirin: The melting point of aspirin is between138-140 Ca ¦, my results were lower than that, this is because in my aspirin they were impurities, these impurities will lowered the melting point of my aspirin therefore making my melting point of the aspirin that I made about 130Ca ¦. Another example is when in winter the, vehicles go around putting salt on the top of the snow, the salt decreases the melting point of the snow therefore making it easier for road users to drive. So having impurities will decrease the melting point but it increases the boiling point. One way to think of it is that impurities get in the way of the bonds that would be holding the solid together. By disrupting the normal organization of atoms or molecules in that solid, the impurities weaken the bonds holding the solid together (keep in mind these are bonds BETWEEN atoms and molecules, not within them). As these intermolecular bonds weaken, it takes less energy to pull the molecules apart, which means it will melt to a liquid at a lower temperature. Conclusion- in my conclusion I saw that my aspirin had less impurities compared to the commercial aspirin, the commercial aspirin showed more dots, this is because the commercial aspirin had other ingredients added in, this will have an effect on the aspirin, it will make it more impure as for my aspirin it didn’t have other substances added in therefore it wasn’t impure as much as the commercial aspirin. Method:- First I got a TLC plate and measured 1cm above the plate and drew a line, then I measured 4cm wide from the side. Measure 1cm from the side, take 2 test tubes and put in a 3rd of the aspirin with the spatula into the test tube, then a 3rd of the commercial aspirin into another test tube. Add 2. 5 ml of ethanol and 2. 5ml of dye chloromethane to another test tube and mix it together. Take a pipette and add 1cm of the solution to each test tube containing the aspirin, shake well do the aspirin dissolves, then get a capillary tube and put it on the TLC Plate and let it dry, you place the dots with the capillary tube four times and see the colour, then get a beaker and add ethanol acetate into the beaker and wait until the four dots go up on the TLC Plate and change colour and then make a mark. Results:-From my results I got two different results this is because, I used two different aspirins, a commercial aspirin which affected the results because in the commercial aspirin, chemicals where added and in the original aspirin I got normal results. Evaluation: While I was doing experiments in found it easy to work with a partner, the method was easy to set up, I found it difficult to understand the concept of some of the techniques used. Io found it easy to put the equipment away and use it, I had no problem. But because of the science laboratory, we didn’t have all of the resources that we needed so we didn’t make pure aspirin, if I had to do the experiments again I would make sure that I have all the resources that I need to make pure aspirin.

Should I Take the PSAT as a Freshman

Should I Take the PSAT as a Freshman SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips It's never too early to start planning! When should you start preparing to apply tocollege? When you sign up for the SAT? The day you choose your freshman year classes? From the time you learn to read your first picture book? This might be a matter of debate between you and your parents, but we can all agree that planning starts long before you actually start filling out applications. So to put yourself on the track for college success, should you start freshman year off by taking the PSAT? First, what exactly is the PSAT for? Understanding this will let us see whether it suits your needs as a freshman. The PSAT Is For... National Merit Distinctions and Scholarships The PSAT is administered by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, or the NMSC. Based on your scores, the NMSC may award you distinctions like Commended Scholar, Semifinalist, or Finalist. Students in the top 1% might even win scholarships. Only high school juniors are eligible for NMSC awards. So your freshman year score, even if it's perfect, unfortunately can't count for National Merit. However, prepping and getting a practice run or two in before junior year can only improve your score, especially if you're aimingto make it into the top 1%. I strongly recommend takingthe PSAT in at least sophomore year to get in your trial run. As for freshman year? It can definitely be helpful, but it's also pretty early. You might be served just as well by focusing on your schoolwork, developing your academic skills, and doing test prep on your own for the next year. If you want to take the PSAT in 9th grade, then any real test experience can be valuable and help you score higher thenext time. Besides NMSC awards, the PSAT is helpful for another important test... Good Practice for the SAT The "P" in PSAT actually stands for "preliminary," not "practice," but this common misconception isn't too far from the truth. The new PSAT starting in 2015 is closely aligned to the content and types of questions you'll see on the new SAT. Both test your understanding of math, Critical Reading, and writing (though the PSAT does not have an essay component). Both testsfocus on determining meaning in context, whether it's analyzing a passage or interpreting data from a graph. Prepping for and taking the PSAT will help you develop the valuable skills you need to score highly on the SAT. It also helps you pace yourself under strict time limits and apply guessing strategies, like process of elimination. Both the new PSAT and new SAT feature multiple choice questions with 4 answer choices instead of the current 5, and neither has penalties for wrong answers. In addition to testing similar skills as the SAT, the PSAT helps you predict how you'll score on the SAT. The new PSAT is scored on a scale between 320 and 1520, with a range of 160 to 760 for Math and the same for Reading and Writing. The new SAT will be scored out of 1600, with a range of 200 to 800 for Math and the same for Reading and Writing. These scales are very similar, with the PSAT scores shifted down to account for the fact that it's a somewhat easier test than the SAT. How you do on the PSAT helpspredict how you'll do on the SAT, with the knowledge that the SAT is somewhat more challenging. Not onlycan you use your PSAT score as a predictor of how you are likely to score on the SAT, you can alsouse it to set goals and up your target scores. Because of this, it can only help you to begin to get familiar with the PSAT freshman year, as scoring well on these tests is all about practice and preparation. But again, it's up to you whether taking the official PSAT or simply practicing on your own, like with PSAT practice test pdfs, is most beneficial freshman year. Finally, the PSAT can put you in touch with colleges... To Connect With Colleges To state the obvious, the PSAT and SAT are tests that prepare you for applying to and succeeding in college. The PSAT can be helpful for providing your contact information to colleges (with your permission) so they can get in touch with you and share information about their campus events, deadlines, and scholarships. If you want to put yourself on colleges' radar early, then taking the PSAT may be one way to do this. Another way would be indicating interest through their individual websites.
